Mississippi GOP wants women to take RU-486 only with doctor present…and other nonsense
JACKSON, Miss. — The Mississippi Senate Public Health Committee has passed a bill requiring any doctor performing abortions to be an OB-GYN with hospital admitting privileges.
House Bill 1390 advances to the full Senate. Some lawmakers say it could shut down Mississippi’s only remaining abortion clinic.
Two other abortion-regulation bills died under a Tuesday deadline, but supporters are trying to revive them.
Senate Judiciary B Committee Chairman Hob Bryan says he chose not to bring them up for consideration because he believes they’d be challenged in court.
House Bill 1196 would’ve prohibited abortion once a fetal heartbeat is detectable, unless the woman’s health is at risk.
House Bill 790 would’ve regulated the use of the abortion-inducing drug RU-486 by requiring the prescribing physician to be in the room when the woman takes it.
Sigh…I guess this is what I get for living in one of the reddest of the red states. Generally speaking I am pro life but even I think most of these GOP “war on women” proposals are complete and utter nonsense.
I must give Mr. Bryan a small bit of credit for being smart enough to realize that if the bills were passed, they’d almost certainly be struck down in court. But, as noted above, that’s not going to stop pro lifers from trying to get them enacted some other way.
I have a feeling this “war” is a long way from over
